Earlier this year the British Council – the UK’s international organization for educational opportunities and cultural relations – launched the second installment of their SRA Selector initiative, offering six UK student radio stations the chance to produce and present their weekly radio show, The Selector. Last year’s winner, Jack Saunders, now presents his own show on Kerrang! Radio so the initiative has become a great opportunity for UK students to break into the radio industry.
Folded Wing gave the six students taking part in the project a two day production training course and the student station that did the best job of producing their own version of The Selector had the chance to win a trip to Mexico to spend a week working at The British Council’s sister station, Ibero 90.9 FM, in Mexico City.
At the Student Radio Conference in Exeter this week, Goldierocks and Phil Catchpole from The British Council announced that the second winner of the SRA Selector, and the winner of the trip to Mexico, is Ross Buchanan of Smoke Radio at the University of Westminster. Big congratulations to Ross!
Phil Catchpole, Selector Programme Manager for The British Council, said; “Following on from the success of last year’s SRA Selector was the main aim and this year’s students have all been brilliant. You can really hear the training they have received coming through in their shows and picking a winner was a tough task. I love the SRA Selector as it is providing opportunities for great, young and talented people in the UK whilst connecting them with our international radio family.”
Ross Buchanan, winner SRA Selector, said;
“Just being selected to take part in the SRA Selector was a huge opportunity, but actually winning it has been surreal. Huge thanks to the British Council, Folded Wing and Smoke. Mexico is going to be a life changing experience and I can’t wait to go.”
The trip to Ibero 90.9FM in Mexico City will be taking place in early June. Watch this space for news and developments!
