The Selector: Show 800

December, 2016 / December, 2016

We recently clocked up our 800th show of The Selector. That's fifteen years worth of consecutive Fridays where we have released a radio show of fresh and exciting new British music, not a single week has been missed!

It is a real pleasure to put the show together each week and the biggest challenge is how to fit as much as we can into the show as the UK is constantly producing brilliant new artists and genres. The world has changed a huge amount in the last fifteen years we have been on air, and the show has continued to develop too. Today, we broadcast in forty-three countries on over fifty radio stations.

All the way back in 2001, The Selector was devised by The British Council and Somethin' Else, the shows original producers, and it was presented by Andrea Oliver, who brilliantly steered the ship until 2009. Originally, the show was recorded and then distributed by posting data discs to our partner FM radio stations around the world, which added to the length of time between recording and broadcasting. These days we use an FTP, so the stations get the show fresh from the studio to share with the listeners.

One of the unique aspects of The Selector is the kit version of the show. This allows our station partners to put together their own version of the show with a presenter using the local language. Each week, a script is provided in English along with transcripts of all the interviews allowing us to reach a much wider audience. Take a listen to the show from the Ukraine....

In 2009, Goldierocks joined the team as the new presenter of The Selector and the show began to evolve, introducing live bands, DJs and parties all over the world. In 2010, we recorded the show overseas for the first time at the studios of our long term partners in Mexico City, Ibero 90.9FM, and it was during this trip that the concept of Selector After Dark was born.

During 2010, Folded Wing became our production partners and since then, we have made the show in many places including Kazakstan, Cuba, Mauritius, Malawi and Albania. Together with the Student Radio Association in the UK, we have introduced a hugely successful training and development programme for up and coming broadcasters, something we are looking to open up to our partner radio stations across the globe.

The show this week celebrates some of our favourite moments of the last fifteen years, there are some highlights below. Next week, we will be back to our usual position of looking towards the future and we are as excited as ever about what that may hold.

A huge thank you to Steve Ackerman and everyone at Somethin' Else, to Karen P and the team at Folded Wing, Andrea Oliver, Goldierocks and all of our wonderful radio staton partners through the years to the present day. Most importantly though, many thanks to you for listening, it really does mean the world to us.

Big love
Team Selector x
