Part of Folk Nations in January 2014, UK guitarist, singer and songwriter Sam Carter travelled to Karachi, Pakistan to lead workshops and performance collaborations with two of Pakistan's finest classical musicians: sitar player Sajjid Hussain and tabla player Haroon Samuel. The project is produced in partnership with the Tehzeeb Foundation. Their Director, Malahat Awan, was part of an international delegation attending our first Music Showcase programme at Celtic Connections in 2013, where he first saw Sam perform.
Lasting eight days, the residency saw Sam lead a song-writing workshop at Pakistan's National Academy of Performing Arts, present two performances in Karachi (including a livestreamed performance) and make several television appearances.
This project is part of the British Council's on-going Folk Nations programme, which connects UK and South Asian musicians, and music organisations with a view to exploring ways of sharing and interpreting traditional music.
The Tehzeeb Foundation is working for advancement and promotion of music, literature and fine arts in Pakistan. It is also carrying out preservation and archiving of classical music of the sub-continent. It is a non-profit organization.
Music has always played important role in human history as a medium of expression of human feelings and thoughts. We believe it has now become more relevant and has a bigger role to play in future. A great credit in this context, goes to our music practitioners who managed to carry forward their art despite the odds. The oral tradition so developed managed to prove itself a living tradition through “Guru-shishya” or “Ustad-Shagird” system. Accordingly our literature and fine arts have survived and flourished despite socio-political turbulence. We feel that it is time to take ownership of our artistic heritage which actually derives its roots from the centuries old Indus Valley civilization.
In order to achieve its goals, Tehzeeb Foundation holds conferences, conducts seminars and publishes works of eminent scholars and artistes. It collaborates with other organizations such as APMC (All Pakistan Music Conference) Lahore, Karachi Arts Council, PACC (Pakistan American Cultural Centre) Karachi, Academy of Letters, Islamabad, NAPA (National Academy of Performing Arts) Karachi and others.
