Josephine at Harare International Festival of the Arts

The British Council celebrates our ongoing partnership with Africa’s largest and longest-running arts festival, Harare International Festival of the Arts, which is now in its 15th year with several performances from soulful Manchester chanteuse Josephine.

Born to a Liberian mother who returned to the UK before her birth, Josephine grew up in a musical household soaking up Manchester’s musical heritage and everything from Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Reggae, Joni Mitchell and Soul to King Sunny Adé and Fela and it’s possible to trace these diverse influences in her songs.

Josephine is set to make her HIFA debut on 1 May on the Global Stage and will deliver a workshop for young Zimbabwean songwriters on 2 May before opening the First Street public Stage later that day. Josephine will play her final show on the Global Show on 3 May before heading home.
