The Great Escape 2017

It's that time of year again! The Great Escape gets underway in Brighton, heralding the start of the UK music festival season with a long weekend featuring the very best British music around. Sometimes referred to as the UK's South by Southwest, The Great Escape is now in its 12th year and firmly established as the place to be if you want to listen to new bands emerging onto the British music scene.

The British Council's relationship with The Great Escape goes back several years. Last year, as part of The Great Escape conference, we presented the results of research we had commissioned to investigate the opportunities available overseas for UK musicians and UK music industry. You can read the full Going International report here, which is still relevant for anyone looking to get an idea of the various funding bodies and opportunities out there for musicians, bands and industry around the UK. This year, we've invited a delegation of journalists, festival producers and industry experts from around the world to see new British music for themselves with the aim of promoting future collaborations and overseas opportunities. Last year, Kero Kero Bonito travelled to Indonesia to perform in Jakarta after being spotted by our Indonesian delegation at The Great Escape 2016. Going the other way, Neonomora, a performer from Indonesia who was also part of last year's delegation, announced her first UK live dates in 2017 following connections she made with UK industry while visiting in 2016.
