Our SRA Selector students have undertaken their radio training this week at Folded Wing. Spread over two days, the six students took part in radio masterclasses covering the theory of presenting, building a show, sound design and a presenter Q&A session with Goldierocks (The Selector and Capital FM) and Monki (BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra). Otzeki dropped in to perform live, enabling the students to learn how to mic up and successfully record a live session.
During the evening, we held a social event with former SRA Selector winners Jack Saunders (RadioX), Ross Buchanan (RadioX) and Andy Backhouse (BBC Introducing) sharing their experiences with this year's students along with representatives of the radio industry and British Council. Happyness provided live entertainment and their set was also recorded and will feature on The Selector in the next few weeks.
On day two, the students split into three groups and presented three hours of live radio from Folded Wing's studio, putting into practice everything they had learnt on the training days. This years students are...
Jen Thomas - Fly FM (Nottingham)
Ollie Brookes - URB (Bath)
Tanya Pilikian - LSR (Leeds)
Benedict Jones - Spark (Salford)
Leah Davis - Insanity (Royal Holloway)
Cassidy Baillie - BLAST (University Of West London)
For the next three months, each student will present their own version of The Selector on their respective university radio stations. The student who does the best job with the show, demonstrating what they have learnt on the training days will win a trip to Mexico City this summer to work at Ibero 90.9FM.
A huge thank you to Ian Parkinson, Micky Curling, Pete Linney and everyone at Folded Wing for providing two wonderfully informative days.
