Soundcastle is a London-based social enterprise dedicated to devising and leading creative music workshops and projects. Whether working with professional artists or members of the community, our primary goal is always the same: to promote and facilitate the creation of new music, which is entirely reflective of the creative voices of each project's participants.
Soundcastle facilitates a diverse range of projects in community settings such as schools, nurseries and care homes. We also curate artistic events and local festivals, which bring together programmes of international, professional artists with community music groups. We believe in the potential for high-quality, artistic expression in community contexts and therefore value the opportunity to repeat projects and performances, maintaining an on-going artistic community network. Our flagship project is Musical Beacons, which works alongside intergenerational groups of residents in Bow and Charlton, two London boroughs either side of the river Thames. Throughout the project, we facilitate the groups in collaboratively composing music, which celebrates their local identity. They then share their creations with the other borough, reaching out to each other through their combined joy of musical expression.
Soundcastle constantly researches artistic practice and we offer professional development opportunities for musicians and educators. In the past, this has taken us abroad to Brazil, Singapore, Bali, The Gambia and Argentina. Other cultures have much to offer us in terms of ideas about formal and informal music education, particularly when considering a collaborative approach and we enjoy sharing our own ideas in return.
