The British Council and PRS Foundation’s Musicians in Residence partnership supports artists to spend time working overseas, immersing themselves in another culture, making connections, developing their artistic practice and engaging with the local community. It began in 2011 with Jamie Woon, Imogen Heap, Gareth Bonello and Matthew Bourne each relocating to different parts of China for six week residencies which inspired new work from Imogen Heap's incredible track (and video) "Xizi She Knows" to Jamie Woon's "Little Wonder" which featured on the Mercury-nominated Making Time.
In 2017, we began the Musicians in Residence, Brazil programme with Phantom Chips (Tara Pattenden), Lady Vendredi (Nwando Ebizie) and Nathaniel Mann relocating to Rio de Janiero, Recife and Mato Grosso exploring wearable music tech, creating music inspired by carnival and working with the Wauja community in a remote area along the Xingu river. In 2018 and 2019, three new musicians are taking up the story - congratulations to Awate, Redinho (Tom Calvert) and Emma-Jean Thackray. Follow #MIRBrazil to keep up with all the news and music along the way.
