Musicians in Residence 2021-22 – Meet the Artists

We’re delighted to be welcoming exciting and talented from the UK and overseas to our largest ever, and first fully digital, edition of Musicians in Residence, in partnership with PRS Foundation.

Musicians in Residence 2022 sees music creators virtually embedded in creative organisations in eight different cities around the world – in Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, South Africa and the UK. This year, the residents are:

• SHHE, hosted by B’sarya in Alexandria, Egypt
• Ahmed Saleh, hosted by Cryptic in Glasgow, UK
• TĀLĀ, hosted by Padepokan Seni Bagong Kussudiarja in Yogyakarta, Indonesia
• Rani Jambak, hosted by hcmf// in Huddersfield, UK
• GLOR1A, hosted by The Other Radio in Cape Town, South Africa
• Clement Carr, hosted by Brighter Sound in Manchester, UK

The residencies offer the opportunity for each musician to create original work, build networks, reach new audiences and explore the different cultural influences in another country. Working closely with their host organisation, they will connect with the area's individual music scenes and communities. Each artist will be documenting their residency online and will share some of their work at the end of their time.

They follow in the footsteps of previous music creators who have undertaken residencies in China, Brazil, Russia and the UAE, including Anna Meredith, Sarathy Korwar, Emma-Jean Thackray, Nwando Ebizie, Vessel, David Lyttle, Emmy The Great and The Gentle Good.

Meet the artists in residence

Pedro Carneiro Silva, Brazil

Pedro Carneiro Silva is a pianist and composer from Rio de Janeiro. His creative musical process stands out for an approach that explores the interaction between experiences, feelings and music.

In partnership with the German/Iranian artist Ardalan Aram, he develops the Free Seat project, which proposes an innovative way of creating music through random encounters in the city. With the project, Pedro and Ardalan received awards in Brazil and abroad. Over the years, Free Seat has been performed in Berlin, São Paulo, Frankfurt, Lisbon, Rio de Janeiro, Recife and Curitiba.

His project O Trampolim de Oiticica, explores possibilities to create music combined with concepts from performance art. Nine musical pieces were composed as a result of performances that explored personal and social issues, inspired by the work of the Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica.

In the last years, Pedro was selected for the Tokyo Biennale 2020-21, invited artist for the Me Convention Frankfurt SXSW 2019 and awarded with the Rumos Itaú Cultural funding program 2017-18.

Pedro collaborates with artists from around the world and has conducted concerts and workshops throughout Europe, Asia and Brazil. He holds a degree in Brazilian Music from UNIRIO (Rio de Janeiro) and a Masters degree in Piano by the Escola Superior de Musica de Lisboa (Lisbon).

Clement Carr, South Africa

Clem started playing the piano at the age of six, saxophone at 16, finished his classical music grade eight through Trinity School of Music and went on to study a Diploma in Jazz studies at the South African College of Music at The University Of Cape Town. He has been performing in bands since high school including The Rudimentals, Goodluck, The Cape Town Jazz Orchestra and The Kiffness. Clem and his projects have positioned themselves to open for Maroon Five, One Republic, Johnny Clegg, The Wailers (of  Bob Marley & The Wailers) UB40 and Bastille. Clem functioned as the second half of The Kiffness (a live producer duo) for a few years and released a number of chart performing tracks while touring the country extensively.

Clem has also worked as Music Director for TRESOR, has performed on numerous chart topping records of Tresor’s and similarly spent a lot of time on the road abroad and locally with Tresor. Clem is also a published songwriter with Tresor’s recording label, Jacquel Entertainmentin partnership with Universal Music Group. Clem is also BONJ’s long time creative partner. This duo were chosen as the national opening act for Sam Smith for his South African tour. Clem and BONJ have been writing together since 2010 with a number of chart performing records together.

Clem has written for orchestra, big band and vocal driven ensembles since a young age and has a strong belief in uplifting young musicians in the spirit of Pan African and global collaboration.

GLOR1A, UK

GLOR1A is a UK based music performer, writer and artist who is unconformist in nature. Her unfiltered approach to creativity builds unique stories of Black futurism and sci-fi sprinkled with new myth and social questioning. Her music is not easily boxed, rooted in Rn'B and gospel; she spans electronica,  trip-hop, noise, and punk to deliver a truly innovative sound. Always trying to push boundaries, in 2021 she released her second EP METAL about a black data robot scouring the earth, colluding to turn the internet off to save humanity. She toured Europe and performed her first headline show in Berlin and London, supported artists Eartheater and Bbymutha and opened her first gaming and performance art exhibition at the Institution Of Contemporary Arts London with the collective Nine Nights a Black-owned and operated music, arts and education initiative co-founded by GLOR1A, Gaika, Shannen SP and Zara Truss Giles.

Rani Jambak, Indonesia

Rani Jambak is a Medan-based composer, producer, and vocalist. After completing a Master of Creative Industries at the Macquarie University, Australia, she began her solo career spearheading projects such as Medan Soundspectives – a cultural festival celebrating the acoustic diversity of Medan, and working for Goethe Institut Singapore for Sound of X.

Her musical pieces are often about the social-cultural voices and the relationship between humans and their ancestors. Practically, she records sounds from traditional instruments and performances, also the soundscapes from the specific cultural areas then composed all the sound material into a new pieces. Her new project #FUTUREANCESTOR is basically a way to find her ethnic identity as Minangkabau and how the connection of human living, the ancestor, and nature through sounds. #FUTUREANCESTOR has released 'Suara Minangkabau' and 'Orang Piaman'. Furthermore, #FUTUREANCESTOR will be an on going project as she still collecting sounds in many different places in Nusantara to explore the differences of perspectives, local wisdom, and spiritualism.

She pioneered #FORMYNATURE, an ecological campaign in which she produces music to raise environmental issues. This year, supported by Goethe Institut on Virtual Partner Residency program, Rani collaborates with Lyra Pramuk to produce 'Restore' to celebrate the Earth Day, selling the track as donation for PPLH Bohorok, an Eco Farming Centre. In 2020 she also collaborated with Orangutan Haven to raise awareness of Orangutan and wildlife.

Ahmed Saleh, Egypt

Ahmed Saleh is a musician, composer and sound artist from Alexandria, Egypt. He had become one of the spearheads of the Electronic music scene in Egypt. Saleh’s experience as a visualartist had a great affection on his music. He composed his first live solo set and made an appearance at the 100LIVE Festival in 2009.

Saleh is a member and one of the founders of the well-known band Telepoetic. He composed the soundtracks for many independent movies, contemporary dance shows and theatre. In 2014 he was a part of Jazz Nomades project and performed at La Voix Est Libre Festival in France. Saleh has collaborated with many artists including Oliver Coates (London) Mehdi Haddab (France), Mederic Collignon (France), Phillippe Gleizes (France), Predrag Sestic (Belgrade), Alessio Ballerini (Italy), Abdullah Miniawy (Egypt), Marc Nammour (France), Phillip Geist (Germany), Tomeka Reid (USA), Nick Mazzarella (USA), Ryan Ingebritsen (USA), Erica Mott (USA), Jamie Scott (USA), Shaymaa Shoukry (Egypt) and Konstantyn Napolov (Netherlands) and his music has been featured on many radio shows in Poland, USA, Italy, Germany, France, London and Egypt. Saleh's music was also released in Europe by the French record label based in Grenoble, Full Fridge, and the Italian record label Unexplained Sounds.

SHHE, UK

SHHE is the alias of Scottish-Portuguese sound artist, musician and producer, Su Shaw. Based in Dundee, Scotland, her artistic practice is deeply influenced and informed by environment and her work often explores themes of identity, connection and the relationship between sound and space. A solo project musically but also a platform for collaboration, working on projects with filmmakers, visual artists, dancers and designers across all mediums, Shaw’s previous composition and sound installations have been presented at V&A Dundee, Summerhall and CCA/Cryptic Nights (Scotland), HANGAR (Portugal), British Council, BFI and Sensoria’s FAMLAB (international) and the Westfjords Residency (Iceland). Shaw's eponymous debut album SHHE was released by One Little Independent Records and was shortlisted for Scottish Album of the Year 2020.

Luke Styles, UK

Luke Styles is a British composer whose work is performed regularly throughout the world. Luke was the first Glyndebourne Young Composer in Residence and the first composer in residence at the Foundling Museum since Handel. Luke’s operas have been performed on the famous Glyndebourne main stage and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of conductors such as Vladimir Jurowski.

Luke’s most recent opera Ned Kelly premiered to critical acclaim at the 2019 Perth Festival and was a finalist in the 2020 Arts Music Awards. Luke’s recent symphonic song cycle 'No Friend But The Mountains' premiered at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne in March 2021 and has been turned into a two-part ABC TV documentary. His 2018 cycle On Bunyah, for Mark Padmore and the Britten Sinfonia premiered at the Wigmore Hall, London followed by a UK tour and performances in Australia, where it was described as “Styles’s On Bunyah is magnificent and just like the poem is raw, not polite” – The Australian.

Luke is currently working on a Saxophone Concerto for orchestras in the UK, France and Australia. In 2022, Luke will compose two major vocal works, an Oratorio for the Three Choirs Festival, Philharmonia Orchestra and soloist Hilary Summers, and a song cycle for the French ensemble Le Balcon for premiere in Paris and at the Lille Opera.

TĀLĀ, UK

TĀLĀ was born in Hampton to an Iranian father and an English mother. Coming from a family of mixed heritage meant she was immersed in a variety of sounds, from Iranian Googosh to Garage, RnB and Hip Hop. She was always encouraged by her father to pick up any instrument and just play it and this freedom of expression is clear in her production style. TĀLĀ set about travelling to Qatar to discover more music and find inspiration, upon her return she began producing a beat tape with a view to posting it independently online. The music got in the hands of Brixton based label Aesop, turning the work into The Duchess EP. She quickly signed with Columbia where she released three more EPs, including the experimental Malika which found her travelling to collaborate with artists from Egypt, Turkey, South Korea and the US. Wolfpack, a collaboration with BANKS was a particular stand out track and began TĀLĀ's transition into electronic producer and Rn'B songwriter. In that time she has also been part of Channel 4’s Future Sounds, Vevo’s DSCVR, sold out headline shows at The Courtyard and The ICA, remixed for the likes of Katy Perry and Petite Noir and worked with brands such as Missoni, Bose and Adidas. TĀLĀ is currently working as a producer on several artist album projects to be released this year  as well as her own bigger project to be released in 2022.
