Mahogany Opera Group creates new opera in new ways, in different spaces and places throughout the UK and internationally. It presents each distinct project with a vitality that stretches the boundaries of what opera can be and who it is for.
Our Research and Development Programme, The Incubator, acts as the starting point for all our work. This on-going programme of workshops and seminars allows creative exchanges between artists, partner organisations and audiences. Through the Incubator we nurture young artists in the early stages of their professional life as they learn their craft and give more established artists scope to take risks and experiment. We are an Artistic Company in Residence at King’s College London and work across the university - staff and students - on a range of projects.
We put amateur participation in performances at the heart of what we do. By bringing people right inside our creative process we enable them to develop skills and interests they may continue to pursue throughout their lifetimes. Over the next three years we will create three new community operas, putting community participants - young and old - on stage, beside our professional performers. These projects enable us to involve more people in our work and reach areas of the country where there little provision for contemporary opera.
