Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

The BSO Education & Participation Department has a thriving programme that see the Orchestra working beyond the concert hall with people of all ages and abilities, reaching communities throughout the South & South West, we organise activities ranging from inspirational workshops in schools to special performances in care homes.  A core part of the Orchestra’s mission is its work beyond the concert hall.

Our education family concerts give the thrill of live music-making that enhances lives. Our work opens doors to a musical world with family projects which are specifically devised to introduce children and families to orchestral music in a fun and enjoyable way giving inspirational large scale performances that will remain in the children’s memories forever.  The huge symphonic sound of concerts offers an array of opportunities for primary school children to discover and engage with music.   Our free schools concerts explore the rich and exhilarating world of an Orchestra and follows subjects associated with the National Curriculum. The Orchestra’s education ensembles, Mini BSO & BSO Resonate Strings, are also frequent visitors to schools to performing concerts, delivering composition projects, coaching school ensembles and inspiring the BSO of the future! We have a specialised programme for secondary students, enhancing curriculum learning and offer unique music education opportunities.   Our musicians can also offer support in the development of composition and ensembles within schools.  Through partnerships with 18 Music Hubs, the BSO is committed to devising and delivering music projects for children from Cornwall to Portsmouth and Gloucester to the Isle of Wight.  BSO Blast is our programme dedicated to working with the Hubs.

We also deliver community engagement projects across the region via music-making days with amateur musicians, collaborative community choirs and special events in day centres, hospitals and prisons.  These projects promote health and wellbeing, social inclusion, social cohesion with communities, by using the power of music to transform lives.
