Selector Behind the Music – Meet Your Host

Welcome, Mo Ayoub – no stranger to Selector – who’s hosting and guiding our guests through their thoughts and insights on these topical music conversations. He’s a multilingual radio presenter and international DJ, ready to share his passion for music with you.

What's Behind the Music?

To say that the music industry is big would be an understatement. In the UK alone, music exports in 2022 totalled a £6.7 billion contribution to UK economy and the industry employed 210,000 people. More than half the population of the UK are active music streamers and there are over 130 billion streams of music each year. Plus, the majority of people in the UK say they listen to music more than they watch movies (77%), exercise (62%), socialise with friends and family (58%) or read (56%). And what’s more, the world of music shows no signs of slowing down.

There are people that love to make music, and always have, and people that love to hear it, and always will. The caveat is that quite how people make music, deliver it, share it and how others consume – both continue to evolve, unabated. Technology and the consumption of music are unrecognisable from how they operated 100 years ago or even more recently. There are fresh challenges but also fresh opportunities to anyone in the industry today or hoping to be tomorrow.

So, Selector Behind the Music is ready to take you on a journey asking experts in their field about: the current and possible future landscape for showcasing music, festivals, how film and music work alongside each other, how journalism and music intertwine, artificial intelligence in music, the battle for gender equality in music and insiders experience of maintaining their mental health against the challenges the industry presents.
